The Jews call the Hamsa the Hand of Miriam or the Palm of Hamesh. The five fingers symbolize the sacred Pentateuch of the Torah, or, according to another version, embody the five senses that every Jew must experience to know God. The amulet is intended to bestow favor from Heaven and protection from temptation.

Hindus also used the Hamsa palm in Jainism, where it was interpreted as submission, forgiveness, and kindness. An open palm symbolized the open soul of a person with good intentions. It was also interpreted as a complete rejection of any violence.

In Islamic tradition, the Hamsa is called the Hand of Fatima. The symbol received this name in honor of the Prophet Muhammad's daughter. There is a legend that explains the origin of the symbol. It says that Fatima, while cooking over a fire, humbly accepted her husband's decision to remarry. When he brought his future wife home, Fatima dropped her spoon in grief and continued stirring the food with her palm. Then Ali, the husband of the Prophet's daughter, recognized Fatima's humble and submissive love and abandoned the marriage. Muslims revere the Hamsa symbol as the embodiment of the five pillars of their faith.

In Christianity, there is an equivalent, identified with the Right Hand of God, which protects the suffering, guides travelers, and directs lost souls to the true path of faith. This symbol can be found on some icons and sacred objects.

For the Phoenicians, the image of an open palm was associated with the moon goddess Tanit. And the Egyptians associated the sign with the god Atut, who patronized fertility and abundance.
