The Somnia Tarot is Nicholas Bruno's unique deck based on his dreams, nightmares and personal experience of sleep paralysis. This extraordinary tarot transports classical archetypes into a surreal world, on the edge of sleep and reality.

The story of The Somnia Tarot began in the childhood of Nicholas Bruno, when he discovered the old tarot deck of his great-grandmother in his grandmother's house. Subsequently, this childhood experience became one of the inspirations for creating his own interpretation of the tarot. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the artist returned to studying the tarot and began combining its archetypes with his dream diaries.

Nicholas Bruno is an American artist working with photography, sculpture and costume. A significant part of his work is associated with experiences of sleep paralysis. Strange figures, a sense of anxiety, impersonal characters and surreal spaces from his nocturnal visions became the basis of the visual language of The Somnia Tarot.

The peculiarity of this deck is that the images were not created in the traditional way of drawing, but through artistic photography. Bruno created sets, costumes and props on his own, then turned them into carefully staged photographs. As a result, each map looks like a frame from a mysterious dream or a fragment of an unknown story.

The Somnia Tarot is based on the classic tarot archetypes of Ryder-Waite-Smith, but the usual plots receive a much more psychological and surreal reading. Many characters are deliberately deprived of recognizable faces, allowing a person to project their own emotions, fears and experiences onto the image.
