Kim Krans's Wild Unknown Tarot invites you to a place where familiar human stories dissolve into the language of nature. There are no medieval figures, kings, or knights here—instead, snakes and owls, swans and deer, trees, birds, flowers, bones, and celestial bodies speak. The world of this deck seems pristine: quiet, mysterious, and utterly alive.

Kim Krans created her deck as a standalone artistic journey into the world of tarot. The Wild Unknown Tarot originally appeared in 2012 as a small, self-published edition featuring hand-drawn ink drawings. The deck later gained widespread acclaim, and in 2016, it was published by HarperCollins, along with a guidebook.

The Wild Unknown Tarot's artistic language is built on striking contrasts: black-and-white graphics meet rare but highly expressive bursts of color. Minimalistic lines leave a lot of empty space, and it is this emptiness that becomes part of the symbolism. The eye isn't drawn to dozens of minor details—it settles on the essential, allowing the image to gradually reveal its mood.

Instead of literally repeating traditional scenes, Kim Krans turns to animal and natural archetypes. The Fool is represented by a small bird, ready to take the first step into the unknown; the Magician by a snake, filled with energy and transformative power; and the Chariot is associated with the powerful image of a horse. Each character is chosen deliberately: their natural qualities become an additional key to understanding the Arcana.

What's particularly interesting is that nature here isn't just decoration. It itself becomes the language of the Tarot. The snake can speak of transformation and vital energy; the owl of insight and the ability to see the hidden; the swan of feelings and the inner world; and the deer of earthly stability. In this way, the cards seem to return us to a more ancient way of perceiving the world, when an animal, tree, or element could be not just part of the environment, but a symbol in its own right.

The Major Arcana tells the story of a person's journey through the most important stages of life. It includes beginnings, trials, discoveries, temptations, the destruction of the old, hope, and a return to wholeness. But instead of the familiar human drama, we are presented with a grand story of nature, where each creature follows its own path, and change is a natural part of existence.

The Minor Arcana also retains the traditional structure but acquires its own visual language. Four suits are associated with natural imagery: Wands with fiery energy and branches, Cups with water and emotional flow, Swords with airy sharpness, and Pentacles with earth and the material world. However, some cards deliberately leave room for interpretation, forcing the tarot reader to listen more closely to their own associations.

The Court cards deserve special attention. Instead of the traditional Page, Knight, Queen, and King, Kim Krans uses the names Daughter, Son, Mother, and Father. This solution rejects the traditional medieval hierarchy and translates courtly archetypes into a more universal system of family and natural roles.

At the same time, The Wild Unknown Tarot cannot be called an exclusively "sweet" or light Tarot. Nature reveals itself as it really is: beautiful, cruel, calm, fragile, and merciless all at once. Bones appear alongside flowering plants, death alongside life, and destruction alongside harmony. This is why the complex cards do not seem artificially softened: they evoke the natural cycle of which every person is a part.

This deck is especially well-suited for intuitive readings, questions about inner state, relationships, personal transformation, choice, and life's path. Sometimes, a few seconds' glance at the card is enough to provide an answer. You don't necessarily need to immediately recall the book's meaning—you can ask yourself what is happening with the image, where the movement is directed, what draws your attention, and what feeling arises first.

This is the magic of the Wild Unknown Tarot: it doesn't impose a single way of viewing the cards. The minimalist images leave room for personal experience, so over time the same Arcana can become increasingly profound. The longer you work with the deck, the more personal its language becomes.

The Wild Unknown Tarot consists of 78 cards and adheres to the traditional Tarot structure, although some of Kim Krans's decisions deviate from the familiar Rider-Waite-Smith system. For example, in the deck, Justice occupies the 8th position, and Strength the 11th, as in the earlier Marseille tradition.

The Wild Unknown Tarot by Kim Krans is a deck about returning to simple, ancient symbols that require no translation. It's about a bird stepping into the void.
